MoMI hosts a free, all-ages Day of the Dead celebration in Astoria today from 4 to 6 p.m., with dance, music, face painting, and family activities.
If you’re looking for something to do this afternoon, the Museum of the Moving Image is hosting a free Day of the Dead celebration from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Kaufman Courtyard. MoMI is at 36-01 35th Avenue, and the museum says all ages are welcome.
The afternoon includes Aztec Mexica dance, music from the Indigenous dance troupe Yayauhki Tezcatlipoka, and a performance by the Mexican Folkloric Ballet of New York. Families can also take part in digital activities, and there will be free face painting inspired by historical Día de Muertos characters.
The celebration will include an ofrenda, or public altar, presented by artist and historian Rosa Ruíz and Catrinamía. The event is co-presented by the Mexican Cultural Institute, and admission is free.
If you’re nearby, it sounds like a nice way to spend an hour or two and experience the holiday with the community. Check MoMI’s event page for the details.
