What’s Taking Shape in South Astoria? Seven Housing Projects to Know

A recent look at seven South Astoria housing projects shows a mix of active construction, excavation, and plans still waiting to begin.

A changing stretch of South Astoria

It’s hard to walk a few blocks in South Astoria lately without passing a construction fence. A recent field report from New York YIMBY counted seven residential projects along and below 35th Avenue. They are at different stages, and that detail matters: some crews are already digging, one building has reached its full height, and at least one planned project had not started construction as of the report.

A few of the sites

At 37-04 34th Street, a six-story mixed-use building has topped out. That means the main structure has reached its planned height, with work continuing on the rest of the building.

At 32-16 38th Avenue, excavation was underway for a nine-story building planned with 87 condos and commercial space. A few blocks away, demolition was underway at 35-17 42nd Street for a 16-story residential building planned with 234 rentals and a small commercial space.

There is also a proposed 26-story building at 37-09 36th Avenue with 198 rental homes. New York YIMBY reported that construction had not begun yet, so it is still a plan rather than a building rising over the block.

What this looks like on the street

These are big changes for a few neighborhood blocks. It means more housing, but the change is something residents experience at sidewalk level: construction noise and trucks now, then new entrances, neighbors, and, where retail is planned, storefronts later. I’ll be curious to see which businesses move in and how these blocks feel once the work is done.

The full roundup, with photos and details on each site, is on New York YIMBY.
